Despite their achievements in the workplace and as leaders in their respective fields, women continue to be significantly underrepresented in the news media as experts and leading voices of authority on important issues. The Daily Femme features news about women and interviews of professional women at different stages of their career paths and from a variety of backgrounds and experiences in order to provide perspectives that are often missing in mainstream media. Researchers, educators, artists, writers, philanthropists and activists helping women access leadership positions, fighting gender discrimination, racism, sexual harassment, homophobia and violence against women, addressing sexism in the media, or advocating for reproductive rights, the women interviewed as well as the bloggers on this site are all committed to gender equality in the US and around the world. By giving their voices an outlet of expression, The Daily Femme seeks to offer both information and inspiration.
The Daily Femme Staff
Cherie Hannouche, Founder and Executive Editor
A resident of NYC, Cherie spent the past three years working for a digital company that helps publishers launch online platforms and syndicate their content. Realizing that women are rarely sought out to give expert opinions in mainstream media, she decided to create the Daily Femme in order to provide her readers with an opportunity to learn from women’s varied professional and life experiences and discuss issues relevant to them. Cherie has a BA in Art History from Mount Holyoke College and is a candidate for a Masters in Media and Communication at the London School of Economics. She is also a trained musician and performer who, much to the dismay of her neighbors, still loves to sing Aretha Franklin in the shower and is not afraid to admit that her dream band would be called Cherbear and the Oh Hunnies.
Born and raised in Athens, Georgia, Cristen has long sought to satisfy an insatiable curiosity about the world and life beyond the small Southern town. In her quest to do so, she writes, blogs and podcasts on breaking scientific discoveries, human psychology, health, history, animals — and of course, women. She earned a BA in journalism from the University of Georgia and quickly hit the road to Atlanta where she currently resides. At the Daily Femme, she keeps her finger on the pulse of women in the media, underreported aspects of women’s social history and gender stereotypes. In her spare time, Cristen loves to cook but can never seem to follow recipes.
Ashleigh VanHouten, Contributor
Ashleigh VanHouten was born and raised in Halifax, Nova Scotia. As a communications professional and freelance writer and editor, she now divides her time between the Canadian east coast and Manhattan. She has published articles in magazines in Canada, Bermuda and the United States, most notably in NYC-based fashion and lifestyle magazine New York Moves. Her hobbies include Olympic lifting and eating her weight in cupcakes–red velvet from Billy’s Bakery, to be exact. Due to citizenship in three countries – Bermuda, Canada, and the U.S. – some call her an international woman of mystery…or at least that’s what she calls herself.
In the rare moments that she’s not talking/thinking/writing about gender and sexuality, Meridith is probably drinking coffee or playing the ukulele. She also loves dog watching in the park, craft brewed beer, and reading poetry. Meridith has seen every episode of SVU ever made, which only embarrasses her slightly. She loves writing about reproductive health and politics, women in pop culture, and gender equality in the workplace, and plans on becoming a professional anthropologist someday.

She is a student, up-and-coming freelance writer, and an aspiring historian. She graduated from Cornell University in 2010 with a BA in history. At Cornell, Sara also pursued Comparative Literature, working with Spanish and German literature, and literary theory. Currently, she lives in Berlin, Germany, where she is pursuing independent research in German intellectual history and improving her command of the German language in preparation for graduate studies. Sara is passionate about feminism, queer issues, history, vegetarian food, (dis)ability studies, fashion, and a wide variety of art.
